EU Commissioner to Elon Musk: Twitter Will Play by Our Rules

Twitter is now owned by Elon Musk, but the EU is keeping a close eye on him should the self-described "free speech absolutist" use the platform to spread hate speech.

Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton replied to Musk's tweet that "the bird is freed" with a wave emoji and the phrase "In Europe, the bird will fly by our laws."

The buyout by Musk, which was first reported Thursday night, could have a significant impact on the site's future, particularly if Musk relaxes the regulations to allow former US President Donald Trump to rejoin the platform.

The platform will not turn into "a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be said without consequences," Musk assured on Thursday.

Breton's tweet included the hashtag DSA, which stands for the Digital Services Act, which mandates that companies that offer digital services take prompt action against illegal online content like hate speech.

A video of the commissioner and Elon Musk discussing the Digital Services Act in May was also posted by the commissioner.

Breton tells Musk in the video, "I was glad to... explain to you the DSA, a new regulation in Europe," to which Musk responds, "I agree with everything you said."

Breton tweeted on Friday, "That's what he said.
