Leaders of the European Union are set to call for a "humanitarian ceasefire" in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Hamas movement this week.
This ceasefire would allow for the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, as revealed by draft conclusions of an EU summit.
The leaders of the 27-nation bloc will convene in Brussels on Thursday and Friday for what is known as the European Council, with the situation in the Middle East topping the agenda.
According to a draft seen by Reuters, the summit's conclusions state that the EU Council supports the call by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for a humanitarian ceasefire to allow for the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance and a pause in the fighting to reach those in need.
The draft also reads that the EU will work closely with partners in the region to protect civilians, support those seeking shelter or providing assistance, and facilitate access to food, water, medical care, fuel, and shelter.
The EU reiterates the need for the immediate release of all hostages without any preconditions."
The EU's call for a humanitarian ceasefire underscores the international community's growing concern over the escalating violence in the region and the need to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians.
