Peace talks between the Ethiopian government and Tigray Popular Liberation Front (TPLF), which are taking place in South Africa, are still facing several obstacles, in order to end the two-year conflict.

The most prominent obstacles are crystallized in how to cease fire and disarm the rebel front, and to what extent the federal government can restore sovereignty over the region.

It is worth noting that the conflict, which began in November 2020, revolves around political influence in the country.

The Ethiopian government accuses the Tigrayan Front, which dominated the ruling coalition until the arrival of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to power in 2018, of trying to reassert the hegemony of the Tigrayans over Ethiopia, while the LTTE accuses Abiy of centralizing power and persecuting the Tigrayans.

While the talks were scheduled to end at the end of October, an informed official told the Associated Press that discussions between the federal government delegation and representatives from the Tigray region were extended until next Monday.
