The Washington Post reported that billionaire Elon Musk’s team has begun massive layoffs in the US federal government, as the Trump administration races to shrink the size of the government’s civilian workforce.
An official in the Office of Personnel Management sent employees a letter confirming the start of a wide-ranging process of layoffs, which he called “force reductions,” according to a copy of the letter seen by the Washington Post.
The Office of Personnel Management has also begun imposing further restrictions on government hiring, according to four agency employees and internal correspondence obtained by the newspaper.
Meanwhile, White House officials are eyeing cuts in agency budgets of between 30% and 40%, on average, across various government agencies, which are focused on massive staff reductions.
