Hugo Ekitike, forward of Liverpool FC, is almost certain to miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a serious injury.
The French striker was forced off during the first half of Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter finals. He went down in the 28th minute following an awkward movement, clutching his right ankle and unable to continue.
According to L'Équipe, Ekitike has suffered an Achilles tendon rupture, an injury that typically requires a lengthy recovery period and could sideline him for several months.
The report suggests he is unlikely to return to action until early next year, effectively ruling him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot described the injury as “quite serious” in his initial comments, confirming concerns over the player’s condition.
Ekitike’s absence would be a significant blow, as he had been aiming to secure a place in France’s squad for the global tournament.
