On Monday, the Egyptian Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Mohamed Abdel-Ati said that the ministry has already completed the rehabilitation and lining of 3,134 kilometres of irrigation canals.
These remarks came during an inspection tour of the water resources and irrigation projects in Fayyoum governorate.
The rehabilitation of irrigation canals falls within the irrigation ministry's plan to stimulate the comprehensive development process for the water system, according to the statement.
"The plan aims to apply modern irrigation system and use smart irrigation techniques," it added.
The ministry is currently rehabilitating 4,589 kilometres of irrigation canals and preparing to rehabilitate another 1,880 kilometres in the near future with the goal of rehabilitating a total of 20,000 kilometres.
Egypt has drawn up a strategy for its water resources through 2050, at a cost of up to EGP 900 billion, including lining and rehabilitating its irrigation canals.
The strategy is based on a four-pronged National Water Resources Plan, which runs through 2037, and is based on rationalising water use, improving water quality, providing additional water resources and creating a climate suitable for optimal water management.
Projects being implemented to increase the capacity of the water system also includes wastewater treatment, seawater desalination, and switching from surface to modern irrigation systems in agriculture.
