Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone call on Saturday evening with Steve Wietkov, the US Special Envoy for the Middle East appointed by former President Donald Trump, to discuss the latest developments in Gaza and broader regional issues.

The conversation focused on joint efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza based on the framework proposed by Wietkov. Abdelatty underscored the urgent need for Israel to respond positively to the proposed deal, stressing that this is essential to reducing escalation, halting bloodshed, allowing humanitarian and relief aid into Gaza, and facilitating the release of hostages and prisoners.

The minister also briefed the envoy on the rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis, warning that the situation has reached the level of famine. He cautioned against the dangers of continued military escalation and the use of starvation as a weapon of war.

Abdelatty informed Wietkov that Egypt is preparing to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction immediately after a ceasefire is announced, in line with the Arab-Islamic plan adopted at the Arab Summit in Cairo in March.

The two sides also discussed the Iranian nuclear file, with Abdelatty stressing the importance of diplomatic efforts to create the conditions for renewed negotiations. He highlighted the need to narrow gaps, restore trust, and pursue sustainable solutions that reflect the interests of all parties while reducing tensions and fostering regional stability.

The call reflects Egypt’s continued role as a key mediator in Gaza and a proactive player in addressing wider Middle East security challenges.
