Proud young men and women celebrated their graduation this week from the U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative (HEI) Public University Scholarships program, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, and implemented by Amideast/Egypt.

According to a statement by US Embassy in Cairo, the students completed their undergraduate degrees in special excellence programs at five universities: Cairo, Alexandria, Ain Shams, Assuit, and Mansoura Universities.

About 157 college students celebrated their educational successes in front of delighted family members at the Grand Celebration Hall-Dome at Cairo University and were honored by the attendance of Ambassador Daniel Rubinstein, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, ad interim, at the U.S. Embassy in Egypt, the president of Cairo University, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Othman Elkhosht, and Shahinaz Ahmed, Amideast’s country director for Egypt.

USAID has been supporting access to quality education for all Egyptians, the statement noted. Since 2015, under USAID’s Higher Education Initiative’s Local Scholarships for Public Universities 673 students from across Egypt have received full scholarships to attend top public universities in Egypt.

Throughout the program, Amideast helped a range of students who enrolled in public universities to  receive academic and career counseling, English language training, internship and community service opportunities, and the option to participate in study abroad programs in the United States.

It's worth mentioning that this program actively works with the private sector to connect graduates with jobs. The program also provided scholarships to 39 people with disabilities and established disability service centers in each of the five partner universities. This program is one of five scholarship programs that USAID supports in Egypt.
