Egypt has welcomed the agreement between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on the status of northern Iraq’s Sinjar, the Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

Egypt has also expressed full support to all measures taken by the Iraqi government to combat extremism and terrorism, achieve security and stability in all parts of the country, and preserve its sovereignty in a way that meets the aspirations of the brotherly Iraqi people for stability, development, and prosperity.

Earlier on Friday, the Iraqi government and KRG reached a historic agreement on the status of the Yazidi city of Sinjar in the northern province of Nineveh.

The deal stipulates to restore stability and normalize the situation in Sinjar.

The agreement includes understandings to withdraw all armed groups from the area (local and foreign ones), restore the local administration, and appoint a new mayor, according to the Kurdistan 24 website.

It will also help in the return of the displaced people to their homes in the city.
