Egypt’s Ministry of Transport inked a recent MoU with Redcon Construction to implement “Monorail”- a suspension railway in Alexandria.
The railway project will be enacted in cooperation with major international companies specialized in transport projects, and Redcon participates as a local contractor.
Probably Alex’s residents are about to bid farewell to jamming traffics and hold-ups, as the monorail is designed to carry 10-15 thousand passengers aboard in single ride.
Meanwhile, the Mediterranean port city’s tailback of bump-to-bump cars congest roads with gridlock, almost daily. Thus, installing a new mean of transportation was essential to tackle the crisis.
The route includes 3 road stations across the city. And, the long-term plan comprises extending the course to Burj Al-Arab.
What is a suspension railway?
You can see for yourself, from the above picture, that it is an elevated monorail where the vehicle is hanging from a reinforced track. Mainly, the system is established above street level, over an existing trackage, a river or a canal.
In 1901, Germany unveiled the world’s first one track suspension railway in Wuppertal Schwebebahn. Currently, the monorail is still in operation, transporting over 20 million passengers yearly.
