On Saturday, Egypt will celebrate 2025 Earth Hour Under the theme of "Together Towards the Biggest Earth Hour."
Egypt joins the global initiative of switching off lights for Earth Hour through social media platforms.
The initiative encourages citizens, institutions, and tourist landmarks to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical devices and light candles for one hour, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
This initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of excessive energy consumption, its negative impacts on the planet, and its contribution to climate change and global warming. It also encourages positive behaviors aimed at preserving the environment and ensuring a sustainable future.
Earth Hour is the oldest environmental awareness campaign and global event. The chosen date—on the last Saturday of March—aligns closely with the spring equinox.
Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Egypt’s Minister of Environment, emphasized that the increasing effects of climate change on different regions and countries—whether developed or developing—are evident in extreme weather events, floods, wildfires, biodiversity loss, and land degradation. This year’s Earth Hour campaign aims to achieve the highest global participation yet, reflecting greater awareness and a stronger desire to take positive action against environmental challenges. Last year, more than 180 countries and regions participated, accumulating 1.4 million total hours, compared to 410,000 hours in 2023. The goal for 2025 is to set a new global record.
The Minister of Environment highlighted that Egypt has been committed to participating in this global initiative—organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)—since 2008.
Egypt was among 88 countries, 4,000 cities, and 929 landmarks worldwide that turned off their lights for Earth Hour that year.
The Minister also stated that each year, coordination takes place with various ministries, governorates, institutions, and governmental bodies nationwide to participate by turning off the lights of key landmarks.
This initiative seeks to raise awareness about the importance of taking proactive steps to reduce consumption rates, prevent resource wastage, and adopt sustainable daily practices. Such actions contribute to reducing carbon emissions, one of the most significant challenges facing the world today.
