Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Hani Sweilem stressed on Sunday the importance of reaching a legally binding agreement on the filling and operating of  Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), taking into account the interests and concerns of the three countries.

A new round of negotiations between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan kicked off on Sunday in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

"The continuation of filling and operating the dam in the absence of an agreement is a violation of the Declaration of Principles agreement signed in 2015," the minister said.

Moreover, he added that Cairo is exerting  maximum efforts to make the negotiation process a success, believing that the availability of many technical and legal solutions would serve the interests of the three countries and help reach the desired agreement.
