In a significant step aimed at enhancing the country's tourism infrastructure, the Egyptian government has issued new regulations for licensing holiday apartment units for the first time. The initiative is designed to introduce a new model of tourist accommodation, with the goal of expanding the country’s hotel capacity and attracting more foreign visitors.

Tourism experts have praised the decision, noting that it will help provide high-quality, hotel-like lodging options for tourists while simultaneously enabling property owners to generate foreign currency income. This, in turn, is expected to boost real estate exports and increase tourism revenues.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, a “holiday apartment unit” is defined as any property comprising at least one room, suite, or villa located in either a standalone building or part of a residential structure. These units must offer basic services and be situated in recognized tourist areas or upscale residential communities. They are intended to accommodate both Egyptian and international guests.

A government statement confirmed that several existing holiday apartment units will be given the opportunity to legalize their status under the new regulations. These measures are designed to ensure all units meet minimum standards for quality, safety, and comfort, making them suitable for tourist stays.

Egypt has set an ambitious target to welcome 30 million tourists annually within the next six years. To accommodate this projected growth, the government plans to double the country’s hotel capacity. In support of this goal, it has launched various incentives and financing initiatives to encourage investment in the tourism sector, including a detailed roadmap outlining key tourism investment opportunities for potential investors.

This development marks a key milestone in Egypt's broader strategy to modernize its tourism offerings and position itself as a top-tier global destination.
