Egypt’s new Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, met with Cyprus’s Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, Giorgos Papanastasiou, in Nicosia today to discuss ways to accelerate the development and utilization of natural gas discoveries within Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Badawi’s visit, his first official trip to Cyprus following an invitation from Papanastasiou, set the stage for a significant exchange of ideas on enhancing energy cooperation between the two nations.
During the high-level meeting, which included delegations from both countries, the ministers reviewed the latest international and regional energy developments. They emphasized the need to strengthen the partnership between Egypt and Cyprus, particularly in creating a dependable energy corridor from the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe. This corridor is intended to facilitate the transportation of both natural gas and green energy, addressing Europe’s growing energy demands.
A central topic of the discussions was the potential to expedite the development of Cyprus's natural gas fields. The ministers explored how Egypt’s established infrastructure could be utilized to transport natural gas from Cyprus's EEZ to Egypt. From there, the gas could be liquefied and exported to global markets, positioning both nations as key players in the international energy landscape.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing a strong commitment to deepening their collaboration, recognizing the strategic importance of their joint efforts to harness the region’s energy resources and contribute to Europe’s energy security and diversification.
