Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued a press release on the occasion of International Students' Day, in which the World Federation of Students announced 17th November as the annual World Day for students to celebrate in their educational institutions in various parts of the world to commemorate struggle against Nazi German occupation, that closed all institutes and Higher educational institutions as a result of the murder of one student in Prague (capital of former Czechoslovakia).
Global Statistical Indicators:
The enrollment rate in higher education in the Arab world reached 34%, and in the Middle East and North Africa, it was 41%, which is much lower than in Europe and Central Asia, where the enrollment rate in higher education reached 79%. (The World Bank- 2022).

Higher Education:
- Number of enrolled students in higher education reached 3.7 million students during the academic year 2022/2023, compared to 3.5 million students during the academic year 2021/2022, an increase of 197.7 thousand students an increase of 5.7 %.
- 66.5% of total students enrolled in governmental universities and Al-Azhar,8% in private and community universities, 17.9% in private higher institutes,1% in academies, 5.4% at Above intermediate technical Institutes (public-private) 1.2% at various institutes, during the academic year 2022/2023.
Governmental Universities& Al-Azhar:
- Number of students enrolled in public universities and Al-Azhar reached 2.5 million students, and the largest percentage of enrolled students was in Al-Azhar University, which reached 340 thousand students, representing 13.9% of the total number of students of public universities and Al-Azhar, followed by Ain Shams University, with 199.4 thousand students, representing 8.1% of the total number of students at public and Al-Azhar universities during the academic year 2022/2023.
Private Universities:
- Number of students enrolled in private and community universities reached 296.9 thousand students, and the largest percentage of enrolledstudents was at Misr University of Science and Technology, with 27 thousand students, representing 9.1% of the total number of students enrolled in private and community universities, followed by6 October University, with 24.6 thousand students, representing 8.3% of the total number of students enrolled in private and community universities during the academic year 2022/2023.
Private higher institutes:
- Total number of students enrolled in private higher institutes reached 660.6 thousand students during the academic year 2022/2023, compared to 571.2 thousand students during the academic year 2021/2022, an increase of 89.4 thousand students, by 15.7%.
Above Intermediate Technical Institutes (public-private):
- Total number of enrolled students in above intermediate technical institutes reached 198.8 thousand students during the academic year 2022/2023, compared to 181.4 thousand students during the academic year 2021/2022, an increase of 17.4 thousand students an increase of 9.6 %.
- Percentage of a total number of enrolled students in public technical institutes was 96.9 %, while percentage of private technical institutes reached 3.1% during the academic year 2022/2023 of the total number of students in above intermediate technical institutes.
Pre-university education
- Total number of pre-university education students reached 28 million students in 2022/2023, compared to 27.3 million students in 2021/2022, by 2.8%.
Pre-primary (general - Al-Azhari):
- Total number of pre-primary education students reached 1.4 million students in 2022/2023 (1.2 million students in general education, 188.1 thousand students in Al-Azhar education) compared to 1.3 million students in 2021/2022 (1.2 million students in general education, 162.1 thousand Student at Al-Azhari education) an increase of 92.8 thousand students,by7%.
Primary (general - Al-Azhari):
- Total number of students in primary education reached 15.1 million students in 2022/2023 (13.7 million students in general education, 1.4 million students in Al-Azhar education) compared to 14.9 million students in 2021/2022 (13.7 million students in general education,1.2 million students in Al-Azhar education) an increase of 209 thousand students,by1.4%.
Preparatory school (general - Al-Azhari):
- Total number of students in the preparatory stage reached 6.5 million students in 2022/2023 (6.0 million students in general education, 505.2 thousand students in Al-Azhari education) compared to 6.3 million students in 2021/2022 (including 5.8 million students in general education, 442.2 thousand students in Al-Azhari education) an increase of 247 thousand students,by3.9%.
Secondary Education (public - Azhar):
- Number of students enrolled in secondary education reached 2.5 million students (2.1 million students in public education, 402.2 thousand students in Azhar education)during the academic year2022/2023, compared to 2.4 million students(2.0 million students in public education, 381.5 thousand students in Azhar education)during the academic year 2021/2022, an increase of 136.5 thousand students by 5.7%.
- The percentage of students enrolled in public schools was 83.0%, in private schools 17.0% during the academic year 2022/2023 compared to 84.2% in public schools, 15.8% in private schools during the academic year 2021/2022.
Secondary Technical Education:
- Number of enrolled students in technical secondary schools reached 2.3 million students during the academic year 2022/2023, compared to 2.2 million students during the academic year 2021/2022, an increase of 59.6 thousand students,by 2.7%.
- 46.9% of enrolled students in industrial education, 41.1 % in commercial and hotel education, and 12 % in agricultural education during the academic year 2022/2023 of the total number of students enrolled in technical education.
