A snowstorm hit most parts of Central United States on Tuesday, the day after Christmas, causing delays and cancellations of dozens of flights at Colorado airports.

David Roth, an expert at the Weather Prediction Center, stated that the weather conditions, which saw heavy snowfall in the plains, were expected to slowly improve throughout the day, but the improvement would be very gradual, according to the Associated Press.

At Denver International Airport, there were 200 delays and 18 cancellations as of midday Tuesday, according to the tracking website FlightAware.

Snowstorm conditions led to the closure of Interstate 70, stretching from Denver to Kansas, early on Tuesday, but it was reopened later in the morning.

Storm warnings remained in effect through Tuesday in parts of western South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, eastern Colorado, and Wyoming. Warnings of freezing rain and winter weather advisories also persisted in South Dakota, North Dakota, and northwestern Minnesota.

According to the National Weather Service, a snowstorm occurs when wind speeds exceed 35 miles per hour, with heavy snowfall and visibility dropping to 0.4 kilometers or less for three hours or more.

In Kansas, one person was killed, and three others were injured when a truck driver lost control on icy roads and collided head-on with a sports utility vehicle about 5 miles west of Larned, according to the state patrol.
