The death toll from Cyclone Gombi, which hit Mozambique last Friday, has risen to 12, while 40 others were injured.

The cyclone, accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds of up to 170 kilometers per hour, affected more than 30,000 people and caused the destruction of more than 3,000 homes.

The authorities quickly opened 8 shelters in the northern province of Nampula, which is the most populous province of Mozambique, to accommodate the homeless ones.

The National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD) said on Sunday that the deaths were caused by collapsed houses and fallen trees.
