Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering -Ain Shams University, declared that the launching of the Center of Excellence in Energy in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranked No. 1 in the field of Engineering and Technology in the world, is the first of its kind in Egypt.
This remark was made on the opening of the Center of Excellence in Energy in partnership with the MIT on Thursday, under the auspices of Dr. Mahmoud Al-Metini, President of Ain Shams University, and Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and in the presence of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Eng. Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, Dr. Sahar Nasr, Jonathan Cohen, US Ambassador of Cairo, USAID Mission Director and USAID Representatives, and a group of businessmen, officials and Deans.
The Center focuses on the production of applied scientific research in the field of energy at a level that competes with the global level, and the development of Educational Curricula in Engineering Faculties of Universities participating in the undergraduate and graduate stages to keep pace with the new in the field of energy.
The Centre also aims to establish a fertile environment for innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship in the field of energy to enhance the opportunities to create industries, a new and advanced field in Egypt, linking university education to industry and energy decision makers.
It will also communicate with government agencies to participate and support in the field of energy pricing and the development of laws regulating the optimal use and distribution of energy, and to achieve energy sustainability.
It would continue its functions after the end of the grant through self-support, and achieve regional and global spread to link Egyptian energy programs with its counterpart in the surrounding countries as well as maximizing benefit of the region in its various dimensions: Arab, African and Mediterranean.
Dr. Ashour pointed that the Center has launched the first call for proposals for applied research projects in the field of energy, funded by the Center; any research team wishing to submit a research project would submit a preliminary proposal for the project with the identification of participants from different industry and universities and the required funding, the right partner of MIT.
He pointed out that Ain Shams University took part in the field of Energy Sciences as a main partner and headquarters of the Center of Excellence in cooperation with MIT in cooperation with a coalition of a number of Egyptian Universities are Mansoura and Aswan.
The Dean said the college has successfully formed a strategic partnership with MIT to establish a center of excellence in the field of energy in order to benefit from the grant from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) of $ 30 million.
USAID offered the money to MIT for the establishment of this center in cooperation with the College, in collaboration with its partners from Mansoura University and Aswan University to contribute to the growth of the Egyptian economy.
This center works to support education, research, scientific and entrepreneurship in the field of energy in its various forms. Its establishment came as a result of Ain Shams University winning three partnerships for the centers of excellence in the fields of energy, water and agriculture in cooperation with USAID and a number of American and Egyptian universities.
Ain Shams is the only Egyptian university participating in the three fields.
