Cyprus’ Energy Minister, George Papanastasiou, and Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, discussed on Friday in Nicosia cooperation on joint infrastructure projects for the transportation of natural gas, according to the Ministry of Energy.
Badawi’s working visit to Cyprus at Papanastasiou’s invitation, aims at the continuation of the discussions the two Ministers had in Cairo in the context of the recent Cyprus-Egypt Intergovernmental Summit, a press issued by the Ministry says.
The main topic of discussion during the meeting, it adds, was “the cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt on natural gas transportation infrastructure and the commercialisation of natural gas reserves in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus.”
It notes that the two Ministers had the opportunity to exchange views on ways to strengthen the energy security of Cyprus and Egypt, focusing on cooperation between the two countries on joint infrastructure projects for the transport of natural gas, especially from the “Cronos” discovery in offshore Block 6 of the Cyprus EEZ.
“The said infrastructure, the two Ministers agreed, could form part of a new energy corridor from the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe, while they will also be used to accelerate the commercialisation of Cyprus’ natural gas fields, by transporting gas from the Cypriot EEZ to Egypt for liquefaction and exports to international markets”, the press release concludes.
