Near Israel's northern Haifa port, attempted hijackers set Turkish ship, that was on its way to Israel, on fire.

The accident took place at early Sunday after the container ship took off from Mersin International Port (MIP) in Turkey on Friday.

Israeli Army Spokesman Avichai Adre'i said that they received a communication from the ship crew at dawn today reporting the incident.

The callers stated that there were unidentified persons on board; who managed to detain the ship crew after that.

The unknown passengers threatened to burn the vessel; called "MSC Canberra".

The Israeli air, navy  forces, Israeli police and the vessel’s staff managed to get the incident under control shortly.

The extent of damage is still unclear but the accident didn't yield any casualties so far.
