Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced his country's support for Algeria's lawsuit against Israel, which accuses it of committing war crimes in Gaza, at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

President Petro expressed this position via the social media platform "X" (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. He stated, "The Republic of Colombia will support the complaint of the Algerian Republic before the International Criminal Court regarding war crimes against Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu following the massacre of children and civilians of the Palestinian people, which he committed."

He added that the Colombian Foreign Minister would meet with a prosecutor at the ICC tomorrow.

The move comes after Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called on Monday for a legal case to be brought against Israel at the ICC, accusing it of "war crimes" in the Gaza Strip.

This development represents a significant stance taken by Colombia in the international legal arena, aligning with Algeria's efforts to seek legal avenues to address grievances against the Israeli leadership related to actions in Gaza. The forthcoming meeting between the Colombian Foreign Minister and an ICC prosecutor may be a preliminary step in formalizing the legal complaint and moving forward with the proceedings.

The announcement from President Petro has drawn attention to the ongoing conflict and the utilization of international legal bodies to address war crimes allegations. It underscores the increasing importance of global judicial mechanisms in resolving international disputes and holding leaders accountable for their actions during times of conflict.

As the situation develops, the international community will be watching closely to see the impact of Colombia's support on the dynamics of the case and the broader implications for international law and justice.
