Five US representatives from the Democratic and Republican parties sent a letter to US President Joe Biden, asking his administration to send F-16 fighters to Ukraine.
It is possible that the deputies' letter will not change anything or influence the administration's decisions on what to send to Ukraine, but it does come before the first anniversary of the start of the war and Biden's trip to Poland.
In the letter, the deputies said they were asking the Biden administration to provide Ukraine with the fighter it requested or to send similar aircraft "as soon as possible."
"The provision of such aircraft is necessary to help Ukraine protect its airspace, especially in light of renewed Russian attacks and the expected increase in large-scale combat operations," they added.
It is noteworthy that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, since obtaining pledges to give his country hundreds of modern tanks from Western allies, focused during his visits to London and the European Union summit last week on providing Ukraine with modern aircraft.
Biden answered "no" when asked last month whether the United States would supply the F-16s to Ukraine, although he later said talks with Kyiv over arms supplies were continuing.
