Chinese authorities have decided to impose a large-scale closure in Shanghai, the second-largest city in the country, to combat the Coronavirus (known also as COVID-19).
The closure took effect in the Chinese port city of Shanghai early yesterday (Monday), which means that 26 million people will be subjected to closure and mandatory examinations during the next week.
The surprise announcement of closure sparked panic buying spree in supermarkets.
The government said that measures are necessary to stop the spread of the Coronavirus, after discovering 50 local cases, in addition to 3,450 asymptomatic infections, according to the German news agency.
The closure will cover the city in two waves: the first wave runs until Friday
Anyone found to be infected will be transferred to a special facility. China is pursuing an ambitious strategy to record zero infections, which means isolating any infected person.
Entire neighborhoods or cities in China were closed for examination after infections were discovered.
