On Thursday, China's National Health Commission said the country has reported 31,656 new cases of COVID-19, the highest number of cases per day since the beginning of the epidemic in 2019.

The commission said it detected 31,656 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, of which 27,646 were asymptomatic.

The largest number of cases has been recorded in the southern province of Guangdong, as well as in the municipalities of Beijing and Chongqing.

The previous peak of coronavirus cases in China was recorded in mid-April when the daily increase in new cases exceeded 29,400.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, about 297,516 cases of coronavirus have been reported in mainland China, and 5,232 people have died from the virus.

On Thursday, a number of major cities in China tightened coronavirus-related restrictions amid a new spike in the infection rate.

China has adhered to a zero-tolerance policy against COVID-19 since the beginning of the epidemic, which stipulates introducing strict control measures and enforcing lockdowns in provinces and cities even with a relatively low incidence of the disease.

The epidemiological situation in China has deteriorated in recent months due to an increase in local Corona cases, which prompted a number of cities, including Shanghai, to lock down and force people to undergo daily PCR testing.
