Two years after the outbreak of the (COVID-19) pandemic, the spread of a new wave in China recently raises questions about the way the authorities count the numbers of deaths caused by the deadly virus.

The number of declared infection continue to decline compared to high infections, according to the French Press Agency.

Shanghai, the largest Chinese city, recorded 190 deaths out of more than 520,000 infections in about two months, which is a very low percentage, compared to those caused by the mutant Omicron in other parts of the world.

The ruling Chinese Communist Party may have released these figures as evidence of the success of its strict strategy to combat the virus, but experts say that the data alone does not reveal the whole picture.

China had succeeded in combating the outbreak of the virus locally, down to a few infections, before the appearance of the last wave.
