Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber issued a decision on Tuesday to ban the cutting or unwarranted pruning of trees in all neighborhoods of the capital.
He also referred to the opinion of a committee he formed in case there is a need to move trees under the supervision of the Environment Ministry.
Saber ordered the head of the Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority to establish a plant nursery in every neighborhood, where trees would be sold at nominal prices to citizens.
This decision comes in response to social media uproar against tree cutting in Egypt. Concerns have been raised online that the trees are being cut down to make way for real estate projects, as well as to widen roads by removing hundreds of homes and thousands of trees.
