In Mariupol, a British soldier serving with the Ukrainian Marines was forced to surrender to Russian forces and is now believed to be a prisoner of war.

Aiden Aslin, also known as Johnny or CossackGundi on the internet, has been serving with Ukrainian forces since far before the war began, and has recently been defending Mariupol against Russian invading forces.

However, he has now been forced to surrender due to a lack of food and ammo, according to his social media profiles, which are handled by a buddy.

His family is reportedly in favour of a prisoner swap.

"We've gotten word from Johnny," the message said on social media.

"'We did our hardest to hold Mariupol for 48 days, but we had no alternative but to surrender to Russian forces.'

"'We don't have any food or ammunition.' It's been a joy to meet you all, and I hope this war comes to an end soon.'"

"We're bringing this out after direct conversation with his family," the account continued.

"We'll keep working on sharing the facts of the war until we're told differently."

“Hope for a prisoner exchange.”

Speaking to the Newark Advertiser, Aiden’s mother Ang said: "He was OK and had made contact with his fiancee.

"Of course I'm worried about him and his unit going into Russian hands, but they are the most bravest and courageous men right now.

“They fought until they couldn't fight any more. They had no food, no ammunition, only water.

“He said that last night Russians dropped a chemical bomb via a drone over civilians and soldiers.

"A despicable act and another war crime Putin needs to be accountable for his actions. Everyone who knows Aiden knows he's a good man. A son, a grandson, uncle and cousin and brother."
