On Saturday, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell had a meeting with KSA Foreign Minister Prince Faisal in Bahrain.

Borrell started his press remarks by thanking Prince Faisal for this meeting, saying: "You are right, Prince, we had a visionary attitude when we started talking about the peace efforts in New York [in September]."

The EU official added: "These tragic events [in and around Gaza] give an opportunity, it is a wakeup call. We need to work together in order to get peace and security for everybody.

It can be our common endeavor. And we have to work together, and Princ Faisal with a delegation will come to Barcelona to the Union for the Mediterranean [meeting] at the end of the month, and also he will attend the Foreign Affairs Council in December in order to have a full understanding of each other’s positions."

He added: "And today we have been discussing about how we can advance together to make peace, because peace is the ultimate security guarantee for Israelis and for the Palestinians."

After that, the EU official answered a question addressing the common points between the EU and the Saudi sides on the crisis in Gaza, and the efforts of peace.

Borrell: "Both coincide on security for everybody - security for Israel, and security for the Palestinians. We share the concern about what is happening in the West Bank, and we share the concern for all the civilian losses - in Israel and in Gaza. This requires a common effort – from the Arab world and from the Europeans."

He underscored: "I think that we, together, can push for sustainable peace, and this is our endeavor and that is why I said we will start working, continue the work on what we started in the United Nations, and with the invitation for Prince Faisal and his delegation […inaudible…] to participate in our meetings in Barcelona and in Brussels."

On his side, Prince Faisal said, commenting on the need for an immediate ceasefire.

He expressed: "And for that [there is] UN [Security Council] resolution, presented by one member of the EU and voted for by other members of the European Union, where we are asking for immediate and urgent pauses in order to avoid more casualties.
