U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a phone conversation on Wednesday with his Czech counterpart, Jan Lipavský, to discuss the latest developments in Syria.
A statement on the U.S. State Department’s official website noted that the Czech Republic has been serving as the U.S. protecting power in Syria since 2012.
Blinken expressed the United States' desire to maintain this arrangement and thanked the Czech Republic for its readiness to assist American citizens in Syria, even in a post-Assad era.
During the call, Blinken also highlighted other areas of cooperation reflecting the deep shared values between the two nations. These included the Czech Republic's substantial military, political, and humanitarian support for Ukraine; collaboration on Taiwan and addressing strategic challenges posed by China; efforts to increase defense spending; and enhancing NATO’s collective defense capabilities.
The conversation also acknowledged the Czech Republic's acquisition of U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets, marking the largest military procurement in Czech history.
