US President Joe Biden called on Russia and China to participate in talks aimed at limiting the proliferation of nuclear weapons, noting that Moscow should be responsible in particular after its invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement, the US president said his administration was ready to "quickly negotiate" an alternative to the New START treaty that would end the intercontinental nuclear power of the United States and Russia, which expires in 2026.
"Russia must show that it is ready to resume work on controlling the spread of nuclear weapons," Biden added.
Speaking of China bolstering its much smaller nuclear arsenal, Biden said the communist country has a duty as a permanent member of the UN Security Council to "engage in talks that reduce the risk of any uncalculated steps and deal with a destabilizing military dynamic."
