Reuters quoted senior Syrian officials as saying that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad left Damascus to an unknown destination.
"A Syrian Air plane took off from Damascus airport around the time the capital was reported to have been taken by rebels, according to data from the Flightradar website," Reuters added.
"The aircraft initially flew towards Syria's coastal region, a stronghold of Assad's Alawite sect, but then made an abrupt U-turn and flew in the opposite direction for a few minutes before disappearing off the map."
Events unfolded quickly and dramatically at dawn on Sunday, as armed factions announced that they had begun entering the capital, Damascus.
Al Qahera News Channel reported in a breaking news that three violent explosions had occurred in the Syrian capital, Damascus, adding that the transportation network in Syria had been disrupted due to the events.
It continued that armed factions had entered areas in the Damascus countryside, noting that news was circulating about the armed factions arriving at Sednaya prison, north of the capital, and freeing its prisoners.
Videos also showed Syrian rebels celebrating in the capital Damascus at the Umayyad Square, after capturing the state-run television station.
Moreover, the Syrian prime minister said that Al-Assad's regime will cooperate with any faction that the people of Syria will choose.
