Tens of thousands of supporters of Bangladesh's main opposition party staged a rally today, Saturday, in the capital, Dhaka; to protest against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and to demand new elections.

Singapore's Channel News Asia radio reported that the protesters had gathered at the "Gulabag" sports stadium, where the march was organized, while crowds spread to the surrounding streets.

Tensions increased in the capital after the Bengali security forces stormed the headquarters of the opposition Bangladesh National Party last Tuesday.

As a result, one person was killed and dozens were injured.

Yesterday, two senior party leaders were arrested on charges of incitement to violence.

The party says that more than 2,000 activists and supporters have been arrested since the 30th of last November, in an attempt to prevent the march from being organized.

An official of the Bangladesh National Party said that about 200,000 people participated in today's march, but Farooq Ahmed, a spokesman for the Dhaka metropolitan police, denied this number and said that the stadium could not accommodate more than 30,000 people.
