Austria experienced its longest heatwave on record in July, with several weeks of extreme heat and low rainfall causing severe drought conditions that have damaged key autumn crops, including corn, soybeans, and sugar beets, according to Austrian authorities.
The country has been increasingly subjected to extreme weather events and harsh climatic conditions in recent years, exacerbated by climate change. These conditions have led to significant economic losses, particularly in the agricultural sector, which suffered damages exceeding one billion euros last year, as reported by the Austrian Insurance Association. Farmers have been increasingly struggling with storms and floods.
Christoph Mattila, a meteorological expert in Austria, noted that the state of Klagenfurt recorded the longest heatwave since temperature measurements began in 1950, with 11 consecutive days of extreme heat.
