Two American officials told Axios that Barbara Leaf, Assistant Secretary of State Anthony Blinken for Middle East Affairs, will travel to Damascus in the coming days.
This will be the first visit by a State Department official to Syria in many years, as this visit is part of the resumption of American diplomatic engagement with the transitional government in Syria after the overthrow of the Assad regime.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said last week that the United States was in direct contact with Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, which led the attack that toppled Bashar al-Assad.
This was the first time that the United States publicly confirmed any direct contact with Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, which it classifies as a terrorist organization.
