The Arab League has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel, expressing hope that it will serve as a catalyst for ending the ongoing Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip.
Ambassador Gamal Rushdi, spokesperson for the Arab League, told China's CGTN on Wednesday that the League supports the ceasefire, viewing it as a step toward de-escalating a dangerous phase of regional conflict. He also expressed solidarity with Qatar following the recent missile strike that targeted a U.S. military base on its territory.
Rushdi emphasized that the recent meeting of Arab foreign ministers focused heavily on strategies to halt further escalation in the region and reiterated the League’s longstanding call for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction. He stressed the need for a return to diplomatic negotiations as the sole path to resolving longstanding regional disputes.
Addressing the impact of the Iran-Israel conflict on efforts to resolve the crisis in Gaza, Rushdi warned that the recent hostilities had distracted attention from the core issue — the Palestinian cause. “The escalating tensions diverted global focus from the root of all Middle Eastern conflicts — the Palestinian question and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza,” he said, urging swift international action to address the dire situation in the besieged enclave.
His remarks come as new ceasefire proposals concerning Gaza have been tabled, following the cessation of hostilities between Iran and Israel after 12 days of intense and unprecedented military confrontation.
