Arab Parliament (AP) Speaker Adel bin Abd al-Rahman al-Asoumi stressed, on Wednesday, that strengthening economic cooperation between the Arab and Mediterranean countries requires launching programs with a regional dimension.

In his speech at the opening session of the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Economic Forum hosted in Marrakech, Al-Assoumi stated that enhancing economic cooperation between these two regions would create the desired economic integration and development goals aspired by the people of the region.

Moreover, he noted that organizing the forum comes at a “critical stage in which the challenges facing us in the Arab and the Mediterranean regions are intertwined,” stressing the importance of focusing on teamwork and institutional partnerships to come up with solutions.

He also stressed the importance of the forum in supporting and developing economic and trade ties, promoting peace and cooperation between the countries of the Arab Gulf region and the Mediterranean countries, as well as boosting partnership and cooperation between all parties.

On his part, Saqr Ghobash, Chairman of the Federal National Council of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said that GCC-Euro-Mediterranean relations are 'historic' and characterized by their social, cultural, religious and economic dimensions.

He also shedlight on the European-Gulf Strategic Partnership Document adopted by the European Union (EU) and the European Commission in May 2022, hoping that it will mark the beginning of a broader European-Arab strategic partnership.

Furthermore, Ghobash considered that addressing issues that pose an existing or future threat to people's stability and economic prosperity requires joint action and coordination, highlighting, in this regard, that addressing the phenomenon of terrorism "necessitates joint action to dry up its intellectual and material sources and spread a culture of coexistence and tolerance."
