Two Algerian nationals coming from France and the United Kingdom have been tested positive for the ” Omicron ” coronavirus variant, bringing the total confirmed cases of this variant to four so far in Algeria, the Pasteur Institute said in a statement on Monday.

“In the framework of the sequencing activity of SARS-CoV-2 viruses carried out by the Pasteur Institute of Algeria, for the detection of circulating variants, two (2) new cases of the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) have been detected in Algeria”, notes the same source, specifying that they are two Algerian nationals, coming from France and the United Kingdom.

These two cases were confirmed by the sequencing at the Reference Laboratory of the Pasteur Institute of Algeria, on the basis of positive PCR tests of those concerned, explains the Institute.

Algeria has so far recorded four  confirmed cases of this variant.

“Considering the current global context of the appearance of SARS-CoV 2 variants and the widespread circulation of the virus, it is more than imperative to remain vigilant, to adhere to vaccination and to strictly respect the basic health rules, namely the wearing of protective masks, physical distancing and frequent hand washing, in order to face any possible evolution, as we recall that the more the virus circulates, the higher the probability of the appearance of variants”, recommends the Institute Pasteur.
