The Algerian Defense Ministry said five were killed and three others wounded in a homemade bomb explosion in eastern Algeria on Thursday.
It added in a statement that the victims were in a car when the explosion occurred in Tebessa, about 573 km from the capital, Algiers.
Violence is now rare in the North African country since the authorities ended a war with armed Islamists in the 1990s in a conflict that killed 200,000 people. However, Al Qaeda and other Islamists allied with the Islamic State (ISIS) have been operating in some remote areas.
