Americans would do well to ignore negative propaganda about their country and recognize that there are millions of people across the world, including in Iraq, who regard the US as a beacon of democracy and a force for progress.

That was the main message Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi brought to Washington this week, even if it was overshadowed in the mainstream media by President Biden's announcement that the long-running US combat mission in Iraq, which began in the campaign to depose dictator Saddam Hussein, was coming to an end.

“One problem of Americans is that they tend to believe negative propaganda against America,” Mr. al-Kadhimi said in a behind-the-scenes discussion with The Washington Times, during which he asserted that “Iraqis recognize that the U.S. got rid of an evil dictator and helped build a democracy.”
