On Monday, Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC expressed its support for hosting both legs of the CAF Champions League Round of 32 matches against Kenya's Gor Mahia in Cairo.
This decision comes after discussions between Gor Mahia officials and Al Ahly regarding the Kenyan team’s need for an alternative venue due to their home stadium being unfit for the match.
The Al Ahly management sees this as an ideal opportunity to avoid the travel fatigue of heading to Kenya for the first leg, especially as the match will kick off the new season. Al Ahly is scheduled to play Gor Mahia on either September 13th or 14th, with the match taking place outside of Cairo. The return leg is set to be held in Cairo on either September 20th or 21st.
Al Ahly enters the new season as the reigning champions of the CAF Champions League, having secured the title last season with a 1-0 victory over Tunisia's Espérance in the final. Representing Egypt in this season’s CAF Champions League are Al Ahly and Pyramids FC, while Zamalek and Al Masry will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup. Notably, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted Al Ahly a bye from the preliminary stages of this season’s Champions League.
Under the leadership of Marcel Koller, Al Ahly is eagerly preparing for the start of their new season in the CAF Champions League.
Last season, the club achieved remarkable success, winning four major titles: the Egyptian Premier League, the Egypt Cup, the Egyptian Super Cup, and the CAF Champions League, in addition to securing a bronze medal in the FIFA Club World Cup.
