India's official data shows that more than one million Indians die every year for inhaling poisonous gases.

Supreme Court in India  has ordered local governments of Haryana, Punjab and North Uttar Pradesh states  to  force farmers to stop burning straw in the fields that causes air pollution .

The court stressed that smoke of those fires ascend to the lower layers of atmosphere and pollutes the air in New Delhi, the federal capital of India, to critical levels.

The Supreme Court issues a statement saying that if farmers continue to burn straw and other agricultural leftovers, local governments will go under harsher penalties.

The statement also threatens to apply other penal measures against those who don’t comply with the new rules.

It is worth to mention that the Supreme Court had  suspended works of construction and using electric generators run by diesel  to produce  electricity in the federal capital.

Also the Central government impose more restrictions of private vehicles in the city up to November 15.

Some observers expect that restrictions would be extended to until further notice.

Inhaling contaminated air in New Delhi has become very dangerous.

Air quality in the city dwindled significantly throughout October as New Delhi is ranked as the dirtiest metropolis in the world.

Smoke accumulates because farmers in New Delhi and the neighboring states burn straw in autumn.

Smog shrouds the city under thick pall of pollutants due to the lower level of the city.

Media outlets revealed that measuring quality of the air in New Delhi was impossible days before.

Meteorological monitors installed in the streets couldn’t register points because of thick smog.

Indicators leaped to 999 points meanwhile, the normal level ranges from zero to 50 points.

On the other hand, experts of Earth Ministry in India warned that burning straw grew by 90% within three days only.

Farmers say that they burn straw because they couldn’t buy machines that bundle the straw or convert it to fodder.
