According to British Home Secretary Priti Patel, the French government will not receive a penny of the promised financial aid until the flood of migrants heading for the British Isles across the English Channel is halted, only a day after a record 1,000 migrants purportedly appeared on British shores.
The UK will donate €62.7 million to France to help boost police patrols.
According to preliminary reports from the British media, the number of migrants arriving in the United Kingdom by sea from France set a new record on Monday.
Sky News and the Daily Mail report on a total of 1,000 men, women, and children, but state that the data have not been validated by the interior ministry.
The previous high was set on Aug. 21, when 828 migrants arrived in one day on British ports.
Patel met with her fellow conservative MPs on Monday evening, telling them that the French were responsible for the constant influx of migrants into the UK.
According to The Times, if the French police fail to intercept at least three of the four migrant ships, the Home Secretary is prepared to halt the promised funding.
“We’ve not given them a penny of the money so far, and France is going to have to get its act together if it wants to see the cash. It’s payment by results, and we’ve not yet seen those results,” Patel told MPs.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his support for Patel and stated that the government was prepared to take all necessary steps to reduce migratory pressure.
