Tourism Ministers in nine Mediterranean countries have agreed to work together towards sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean region in a summit held in Valletta.

The ministers of Egypt, Malta, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Libya, Italy, Palestine, and Spain reached their agreement at the end of the ministers’ summit of the Mediterranean Tourism Forum, which was held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

Malta’s Ministry for Tourism Clayton Bartolo said that the ministers agreed to increase their cooperation to further the interests of the Mediterranean region at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation and to facilitate practices that would promote sustainability in all aspects of the tourism sector.

The countries also agreed to share statistics, policies, and proposals, and to keep each other updated on new developments in the tourism sector.

Bartolo hailed the summit as a success on the strength of the agreement and on the discussions that took place ahead of it.

He emphasized that climate change was greatly affecting the Mediterranean, as was made clear in the last summer.

“Consequently, we must collaborate on an international scale so that we can innovate further to develop a tourism model based on sustainability,” Bartolo said.
