88 Countries Suspend Postal Services to US After New Tariffs

Postal services between the United States and dozens of countries have been severely disrupted, with 88 nations suspending deliveries either fully or partially following Washington’s decision to impose additional customs duties.

According to the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the measures have led to an 80 percent drop in international postal services with the US.

UPU Director General Masahiko Metoki said the organization is working urgently to create a new technical framework that would allow the resumption of mail transfers to the United States.

The disruption stems from President Donald Trump’s July decision to end the long-standing de minimis trade exemption, which for years allowed parcels valued under $800 to enter the US duty-free. In 2024 alone, such shipments accounted for more than a few $1.36 billion, according to US Customs and Border Protection.

The UN postal agency, which coordinates cooperation among 192 member states, warned that the policy shift requires major operational changes from postal operators worldwide.

Among the countries that have halted or restricted shipments to the US are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Singapore, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and Thailand.
