Macclesfield produced one of the greatest upsets in FA Cup history after defeating Crystal Palace 2–1 at Selhurst Park in the third round of the competition.
The result marked a historic moment, as Macclesfield, currently competing in the sixth tier of the English league, became the first team outside the top four divisions to eliminate the reigning FA Cup holders since 1909.
Macclesfield took the lead in the 43rd minute through Paul Dawson, stunning the home crowd with a composed finish.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the 60th minute when Buckley Ricketts found the net, putting the non-league side firmly in control of the tie.
Crystal Palace pushed to respond and managed to pull one goal back late in the match, with Yeremy Pino scoring in the 90th minute.
However, the comeback attempt came too late, as Macclesfield held on to secure a famous victory.
Following the final whistle, Macclesfield supporters flooded the pitch to celebrate alongside their players, scenes reflecting the magnitude of the achievement.
Macclesfield are currently the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition, extending their remarkable FA Cup run.
Crystal Palace entered the match as defending champions, having lifted the FA Cup last season after defeating Manchester City in the final, making the defeat even more shocking in the context of the tournament’s long and storied history.
