The sinuses are small air pockets found around the eyes, nose and forehead. They are lined with mucous membranes to moisten the air we breathe and catch the dust and microbes before they reach the lungs.

When our mucous membranes are damaged or when the mucus becomes too thick, infections come to life in the sinuses and lead to more severe conditions like sinusitis which causes many painful symptoms including headaches, congestion, coughing, loss of smell and fatigue.

It is always better to prevent the infection of the sinuses than to treat it. So, here are 4 foods to prevent sinuses infection:

1. Pineapples are rich in antioxidants that protect the mucous membranes from damage. Also the enzymes in the pineapples break down the junk that builds up in the sinuses and reduces inflammation.

2. Chili peppers can clear the sinuses due to the Capsaicin compound that gives them their heat. It eases the pain, reduces the inflammation and stimulates your immune system. Just make sure to eat it in moderation to prevent indigestion.

3. Garlic is just like peppers, it reduces the pain and inflammation with the addition of the Allicin, a sulfur compound formed when the garlic is crushed or cut being antibacterial and antifungal.
