Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has announced that a wave of forest fires in Mexico has claimed the lives of at least four people.

The president stated that all recorded deaths occurred in the State of Mexico, which surrounds the capital and is the most densely populated in the country.

Currently, there are about 116 active fires in forests across Mexico. Around 400 fires have been documented as of March 15th, extending to about 32,000 acres.

Some of the fires have been reported in the southernmost part of Chiapas state, bordering Guatemala.

Official data indicates that the fires have been caused by deliberate ignition as well as agricultural activities.
