According to sheriff's officials, three jail guards in Georgia have been charged with violence in connection with the beating of a prisoner at a county jail that was seen on video cameras.
Mason Garrick, Braxton Massey, and Ryan Biegel, all employed by the Camden County Sheriff's Office, were taken into custody and lodged in jail, according to a news statement from the office. They were also accused of breaking their office's oath of office.
It was unclear right away if they had attorneys.
Security cameras captured guards repeatedly punching Jarrett Hobbs, a Black man from North Carolina who was 41 years old, in the head and neck in September. According to Capt. Larry Bruce, a spokesman for the Camden County sheriff, the three accused deputies are white.
On September 3, Hobbs had been arrested for a driving infraction and drug possession and taken to the Camden County jail in coastal Georgia.Security footage from that evening captures Hobbs standing by himself in his cell prior to the entrance of five guards who surround him. Before being taken from the jail and flung against a wall, Hobbs is punched by at least three deputies.
Last Monday, a Hobbs lawyer made the beating's footage public. The following day, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation made an announcement about starting an inquiry.
Camden County Sheriff Jim Proctor said in a statement, "I appreciate the Georgia Bureau of Investigation supporting our office with this vital incident that occurred."
Two other sheriff's employees are facing disciplinary action in the Sept. 3 incident, according to the sheriff's news release.
