Real Madrid were knocked out of the Copa del Rey in a shocking early exit after suffering a 3–2 defeat to hosts Albacete on Wednesday night in the Round of 16.

The loss marks Real Madrid’s second consecutive defeat, coming just days after they lost the Spanish Super Cup title to archrivals Barcelona.

As a result, Los Blancos have now seen two trophies slip away in the space of two official matches.

Albacete made history by securing their first-ever victory over Real Madrid in different competitions.

The match also marked the official debut of Álvaro Arbeloa as Real Madrid head coach, taking over from Xabi Alonso, who was dismissed following the Super Cup loss to Barcelona.

With this defeat, Arbeloa became the first Real Madrid manager to lose his first official match since Julen Lopetegui, whose side fell to Atlético Madrid in August 2018.
