2025 Spring to Last for 92 Days

Only 11 days remain until the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Winter began on Saturday, December 21, 2024, lasting for 88 days and 23 hours. The season will officially end with the spring equinox on Thursday, March 20, 2025, marking the start of spring, which will last for 92 days, 17 hours, and 35 minutes.

The winter solstice occurred on December 21, 2024, due to the Earth's axial tilt and its orbit around the Sun. Since the Earth is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees, different hemispheres take turns receiving more sunlight. This tilt, rather than the distance between the Earth and the Sun, is responsible for the four seasons.

On the day of the winter solstice, the North Pole was tilted away from the Sun, and the Sun appeared at its lowest point in the southern sky. As a result, all locations north of the equator experienced shorter daylight hours (less than 12 hours), while regions south of the equator had longer days.

After reaching its southernmost position, the Sun appears to rise from the same point in the southern sky for a few days before gradually moving northward due to Earth's orbit. This marks the beginning of longer daylight hours in the Northern Hemisphere, culminating in equal day and night lengths on March 20, the spring equinox.

Following the winter solstice, the Sun slowly moves northward, approaching the equator. As a result, daylight increases in the Northern Hemisphere and decreases in the Southern Hemisphere until the Sun is directly overhead at the equator on March 20.

On this day, the length of day and night will be nearly equal (12 hours each) across the entire globe. The Northern Hemisphere will experience the spring equinox, while the Southern Hemisphere will enter the autumn equinox.

During the spring equinox, the Sun rises precisely in the east and sets exactly in the west. Its rays are directly perpendicular to the equator, ensuring equal distribution of solar energy between the hemispheres and leading to nearly equal durations of daylight and nighttime worldwide.
